Nepal emergency relief: clean water is reaching families now.See field updates

Why water filters?

A small solution to a big problem.

The global water crisis affects more than 2 billion people. Many groups build large, expensive water systems. We do it differently: one home at a time.

The technology

The same technology used in kidney dialysis.

Hollow fiber membranes sound complicated. They're actually simple, and remarkably effective.

  1. Made to filter. Each filter is packed with tiny hollow tubes with holes just 0.1 micron wide.
  2. Cleans the water. Dirty water enters the tubes, passes through the holes, and comes out crystal clear.
  3. Removes bacteria. Bacteria are too big to fit through. They stay in the casing and are flushed out with routine back-flushing.

How effective is effective?

E. coli is three times too big to get through.

E. coli is one of the smallest and most harmful bacteria. Our filter's pores are a third its size.

Our approach

Why filters instead of wells?

A well gives a water source, but that water isn't always safe. Even when it is, the jug used to carry it home is often dirty.

Our filter cleans water where families drink it. It needs no power, parts, or fees, and a family can take it wherever they go.
